Clearmount’s Memorable Props: Star Trek

Star Trek was a huge part of my childhood growing up. Sunday afternoons were dedicated to watching that week’s episode that had been taped on the VCR. Picard’s iconic catch phrase “Make it so” was repeated regularly in our household. Usually regarding chores or homework assignments, but it didn’t take away David’s joy at repeating this to his daughters. So when we were approached to create props for the series Star Trek: Discovery, we just totally played it cool.

Well some of us played it a little cool.

We’re not new to making high profile pieces for the entertainment industry. We’ve created a ‘crystal’ skull for Anne of Green Gables and financial deal toys for Suits. We even have the distinction of being manufacturers of the original Canadian recording academy Juno awards. Celine has several of our pieces.

So we’re used to seeing our pieces on the big and small screen. But, I mean, Star Trek!

Acrylic is a perfect medium for this futuristic and bright show.

It’s minimalistic and is a great accent to all types of materials. Including the inside of a spaceship. Our pieces can be seen as a plaque in First Officer Michael Burnham’s quarters. As well as an award (we’re good at those even in the 31st century!) for one of the ship’s crew. But the most exciting piece was a recognition piece for set decoration that included 3 of the iconic communicator badges. One of our staff members may have gotten really excited and pinned one to his shirt and took pictures to send to friends and family. I won’t say who because I wouldn’t incriminate David like that.

We’ve been part of so many amazing events and recognition moments that just singling out one is hard. But being able to see our work in one of the most iconic franchises just made things so exciting. Our work was used for set design, but also for recognition of the hard work of the team that creates these amazing visual spaces. The customization abilities of acrylic opened up possibilities for them to be creative and to boldly go where no one has gone before.
