What do Maslow, Herzberg, Vroom, Adams and Skinner all have in common?

Besides being eggheads that is.

They are all famous behaviourists who have developed theories on what behaviours and needs motivate and inspire employees.

Motivation - has been defined as: the psychological process that gives behaviour purpose and direction (Kreitner, 1995); a predisposition to behave in a purposive manner to achieve specific, unmet needs (Buford, Bedeian & Lindner, 1995)

What motivates employees is a question asked over the decades by employers and psychologists. How does one keep valuable employees motivated, loyal, and working at peak performance? To help answer the question, consider the work by A.H. Maslow and his study of human motivation and the hierarchy of needs. His theory looks at what human beings need in their lives and the behaviours they exhibit to attain those desired needs. The hierarchy of needs as Maslow sees them are: physiological, safety, belongingness and esteem. Once these four needs have been fulfilled, the final and most desired need - is fulfillment of self. What better way then to help keep a top performing employee motivated and fulfilled, than by contributing to his or her positive sense of self.with an award that honours and recognizes their individual worth to the company, the team, and the mission.
